Software Craftsmanship
People have been making software for decades now. However, many projects are still failing. A pile of code no one understands and everyone is scared to touch. Developers are still seen and treated as resources and companies are still outsourcing software development to cheaper places, disregarding software quality. So, what developers can do about that? How can we turn this situation around? In this talk we will be discussing what Software Craftsmanship is and how it addresses these problems. Are we really professional software developers? Do we act like professionals? Come along if you are interested to know: - What it means to be a software craftsman - What you can do to better yourself - What you can do to better your team - How simple changes can make the biggest difference to your development life - How to ensure you still have a Job in 5/10/20+ years

Kev McCabe
Kev has worked with large corporations in the Finance, Media and E-commerce spaces. He’s currently a Software Craftsmanship Mentor for General Electric; he has had an Interest in all things Agile since it all started, mainly eXtreme Programming, but of late Scrum & Kanban having become a Certified Scrum Master in 2012 and Accredited Kanban Practitioner in 2013. Kev started programming when he was 10 with an Amstrad CPC 464 in basic, then upgraded to a Wang i386 PC at 12. Kev is an Adobe Community Professional.
Motivation in Software Delivery Teams
What is it that makes software delivery teams hyper-productive? How effective are the carrots and sticks of managers in motivating the team? How does current thinking about motivation affect the day to day reality of delivering real world software? For this talk Neil will draw on his observations from time spent in many teams of differing sizes and problem domains as well as from the current literature on the subject of motivation in knowledge workers.

Neil is a motivated member of the Blue Team at NHS Choices where they work on stories derived from user research and strategic goals to frequently deliver functionality of real social value as part of the world leading NHS website. NHS Choices recently celebrated its one billionth visit.
