2014 September Meetup

Tue (05:30 PM - 08:00 PM)

Summary

For the September meet-up we will be running an open spaces session with the theme Culture. For those who have never experienced an open spaces meeting they are powerful tool for engaging groups of people in discussions to explore particular questions or issues. We are looking for people to come forward with ideas for questions to pose or discussions to have around the theme. The only prerequisite for proposing a question is that you will host that discussion and summarise the conversation for the benefit of anyone unable to participate. You do not need to be an expert on the topic you just need to have an interest in the outcome and a willingness to participate it the journey. There is a good write up of the open spaces format here to whet your appetite.

Topics Proposed so Far

  1. Management style, for example the three management styles proposed in this Joel Spolsky blog post.
  2. I've worked in a variety of locations, from small business start-ups to Formula One teams and large corporations. I've often preferred the fluid and open cultures of small teams and found larger corporations to inflexible, bureaucratic and tend to promote the concept of people being 'promoted to their level of incompetence' How do we maintain an open and flexible culture in a large organisation, and does anyone have any experience of this?
  3. Micro Services: a necessary evil?
  4. Working with remote teams and how to know they are completing the work?
  5. Client sign off timelines
