Summary

The agile movement does seem to have crossed some kind of chasm over the past couple of years. With agile development jobs plastered everywhere, the government creating its own agile bright spot and even the financial sector filled with reported agile success stories one could superficially think that the transitional job was done. However the truth is always more nuanced, the Gantt chart is alive and kicking and many agile delivery teams still operate inside a budgeted project envelope. Allan Kelly, custodian of the #BeyondProjects hash tag, author of several books and popular conference speaker will be visiting at Agile Yorkshire's February meet-up to present on the subject of IT projects, how much happier we could be without them and what should happen instead.

Beyond Projects - why projects are wrong and what to do instead
Good projects make for bad software. At best the concept of a "Project" is erroneously used in IT - specifically development work. At worst the Project metaphor leads to dysfunctional teams, dead software, higher costs and missed business opportunities. It is time to reach beyond projects and create a new model. This talk will examine the project model and show how it fails to match software development. Next it will outline an alternative to the project model and what companies need to do to achieve it.

During his career Allan Kelly has held just about every job in the software world, from system admin to development manager by way of programmer and product manager. Today he works for Software Strategy where he helps teams adopt and deepen Agile practices, advises companies on development in general and writes far too much. He specialises in working with software product companies and aligning products and processes with company strategy. He is the author of three books: Xanpan - team centric Agile Software Development, Business Patterns for Software Developers and Changing Software Development: Learning to be Agile; the originator of Retrospective Dialogue Sheets, a regular conference speaker and frequent contributor to journals.
