2016 July Meetup

Tue (06:00 PM - 08:00 PM)

Summary

Join us at Agile Yorkshire for an engaging exploration of workspaces, agility, and scaling Agile. Ian will dive into his doctoral research, comparing traditional and co-working environments, and challenge us to rethink the difference between 'workspace' and 'workplace.' What really matters to us, and how does it impact our organisations? In a collaborative discussion, we'll also tackle the meaning of 'agile' in different contexts—workplaces vs. software development—and consider any potential overlaps. Then, McKenna Consultants will share the highs and lows of implementing the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) for a major Android project, giving us a real-world look at Agile at scale!

Programme

What matters to people about workspace?
Ian will share insights from his doctoral research, which utilised a novel research technique to qualitatively explore two contemporary 'knowledge work space' case-settings - one 'traditional' workspace and one 'co-working' workspace. He will encourage attendees to consider the difference between 'workspace' and 'workplace', and indeed what matters to them personally, and for their own organisations. The session will conclude with a collaborative exploration of 'agile' - a term with different connotations in the workplace and software development arenas - is there some sort of overlap, and what might the implications be?

Ian Ellison
Ian has 18 years’ experience spanning facilities and workplace management, education, research and consultancy, and is currently a Senior Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University. He has developed a reputation as an engaging and entertaining thought leader and is regularly invited to speak on the industry conference circuit where he shares research findings alongside insights from practice and academia. Ian is particularly interested in change leadership and workplace challenges within organisations and has been involved in a range of commissions to help facilitate organisational performance improvement. Ian has published journal articles, papers and book chapters exploring the human and cultural elements of organisational and workspace change, including organisational ecologies, social constructionism and FM, and the paucity of critical, sociological awareness in the industry. He is currently completing his doctorate which has involved five years of research using innovative qualitative methods to explore 'what matters' to both providers and users of organisational space in both traditional and co-working workspace environments. He has shared insights from his research for Workplace Trends, IFMA Foundation, Euro FM, BIFM and at a range of other industry ‘thought leader’ events.
SAFe Experiences
The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is the most popular of the Agile scaling methods. McKenna Consultants have been implementing SAFe with several clients over the last 18 months. This short presentation is the "war story" of implementing SAFe for a high-profile new Android product development. We will tell you all about the triumphs and perils of implementing Agile at scale!

Nick McKenna
Back in March 2004, Nick had a vision to create a software company who built high quality, professional, value delivering systems. He was inspired by everything that he was learning from the (back then) revolutionary Agile approaches to software development and felt that these principles would make for the foundations of a great company. So, on 22nd March 2004, McKenna Consultants was born in Harrogate, UK. Fast forward 12 years and McKenna Consultants is a leading provider of Agile Coaching, Mentoring and Training to other software development teams and companies.
