Delivering the Impossible - Successful Ways of Seeing Project Management
"Point of view is worth 80 IQ points." This is a quote from software pioneer Alan Kay. If we can look at our projects in the right way, we can be much smarter in our thinking about them. This can be the difference between thinking at a near-genius level or behaving like an idiot. In this talk, I explore some of the most helpful ways of seeing project management—and then some of the most "dumb" ways of seeing projects. Why are we so tempted to view projects in ways that make them seem impossible and undeliverable? I explain why our natural way of thinking tends to make delivering projects more difficult than it needs to be. And I show how we can change our thinking so that even the most impossible-looking projects have the best chance of success.

Mark Stringer
Mark Stringer has worked in software development for 30 years—as a programmer, researcher, and, for the past 15 years, a project manager. He’s worked with IBM, Xerox, and Cambridge University. He wrote his book Delivering the Impossible after realizing that many project management books pretend that success is inevitable, if only you follow the right method. In his book, he explains why how we look at projects leads to so many of them becoming undeliverable and impossible. He also explains what we can do to give projects the best chance of success, and even how we can avoid feeling bad while we’re doing it. Recently, he also wrote and performed possibly the only fringe show ever about project management. He took his one-man show to the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. He holds an honours degree in philosophy from St Andrews University and lives in London and Thessaloniki, Greece, with his wife. His hobbies include learning Greek, writing jokes, and searching for his slippers.
